The Ice house was initially a component of the Hotham Park Estate. It is believed to have been constructed around 1792 for the purpose of storing and preserving food for the estate. The entrance faces north, and the underground vault would have been paved with pebbles to facilitate drainage, while the vault itself was filled with ice and straw as part of the preservation method.
The Ice House reaches a depth of 6 metres (almost 20 feet) and has a diameter of approximately four metres (13 feet), making it one of the few remaining intact examples of an Ice House in West Sussex. It is owned by Arun District Council as part of the Hotham Park estate and underwent restoration in 1970.
